Indigenising University Mathematics 3
6-8 November 2024 at La Trobe University & online
"We know mathematics is as old as creation because we find it in our creation stories: first there was no one, then there was one, then there were two, and so on. We know mathematics permeates our life because we find it in our art, our culture, our games, and our ceremonies."
Indigenising University Mathematics 3 (IUM3) will be held at La Trobe University in Bundoora, 6-8 November 2024. The morning sessions (and one afternoon satellite event) will also be available online (using Zoom).
This conference continues the learning journey from IUM1 and IUM2, sharing a growing understanding that Indigenising Mathematics is not just about inserting particular pieces of information into a curriculum, but about engaging with different knowledge systems and ways of knowing.
The event is aimed firstly at Mathematicians and Mathematics Educators who are thinking about Indigenising curriculum and are seeking a foundational understanding of how Indigenous understandings and ways may relate to Mathematical ways of thinking. A baseline understanding of this kind is relevant to education and practice from kindergarten to postgraduate university.
A way into these understandings will be provided by Dr Doolittle through a deep sharing from his Kanyen'kehake (Mohawk = Flint Nation) culture. This will give us a language through which to share and discuss the knowledges from our own places, including what is similar and different in the unique places we each come from.
Beyond the first intended audience of "mathsy" people, this conference is a space of welcome for any academic or teacher or person engaged in our education systems, who wants to understand and/or share more about Indigenous ways of thinking and knowing and valuing.

Keynote speaker
This year, IUM3 will be cast around the visit to the Australian continent of A/Prof Edward Doolittle, who will share understandings he has come to around Creation, Indigenous Mathematics, and the Intersectional spaces in which we attempt to Indigenise Mathematics.
A/Prof Edward Doolittle of the Kanyen'kehake (Mohawk = Flint Nation) is a pure mathematician (PDEs) who is esteemed in Canada and elsewhere around the world for his work in Indigenous Mathematics and Education. For more information about Edward please see our Keynote Speaker page.
